Course Description:
This course is designed to develop an understanding of physical, mental, and social health as it pertains to the high school student.
[Mr. Bailey reserves the right to make changes or revisions in the course (within the confines of the Standard Course of Study) and course syllabus, as I deem appropriate.]
Objectives: The course will provide a knowledge base and applications in the following areas:
Assignments will be weighted differently. Class work/homework will be weighted the same and tests/projects will be weighted higher. We will be following a seven point scale. The student’s grade is earned, not given.
A 100 - 90
B 89 – 79
C 78– 68
D 67 – 57
F 56 and below
Academic Honor Code:
A student’s name on an assignment, a quiz, test or project will be taken as an indication that he/she has not given or received inappropriate assistance in completing the work.

- Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to access valid health information and health-promoting products and services.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to practice health-enhancing behaviors and reduce health risks.
- Students will analyze the influence to culture, media, technology, and other factors on health.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to use goal-setting and decision-making skills to enhance health.
- Students will demonstrate the ability to advocate for personal, family, and community health.
- Examine one’s health and make positive changes to improve health.
- Analyze one’s self-concept; learn how to alter it and its effect on quality of life.
- Assess one’s social life and build healthy relationships.
- Study the body systems and learn how to develop and maintain sound physical health.
- Analyze the harmful effects of alcohol and demonstrate refusal skills.
- Analyze the harmful effects of drugs and demonstrate refusal skills.
- Differentiate between communicable diseases and non-communicable diseases, their effects and treatments.
- Build safe habits at home and at school.
- The learner will maintain and develop a health notebook that contains this syllabus, relevant class work, handouts, study guides, quizzes, tests, projects, and other information to be determined by the teacher.
- The learner will prepare for class prior to each meeting by completing assignments, reviewing notes and/or reading the appropriate portions of the book.
- The learner should make every effort to be on time and attend each class meeting.
- The learner should follow the class rules created at the beginning of the semester.

- Get off to a good start
- Have a good work ethic
- Set priorities
- Study and read any chance that you get
- Take good notes
- Try to do more than the bare minimum
- Be well organized
- Schedule some study time
